Last Game & Awards Day!

We can't believe it, but it's already here!  Tomorrow we will play our final games and have our awards ceremonies for the spring season. Games will end about five minutes earlier than usual, so we can have time to hand-out awards and certificates.

State Tournament Update: 11-15 year old games CANCELED

The Complex just informed us that all games for 11-15 year olds are canceled today. The lower south side fields are under water and they will not let us play on them. This is tough news, but unfortunately, not our call. 

All 9-10 year old games are delayed one hour.

All 5-6 & 7-8 year old games are on as scheduled.

Game #5 - Summit Saturday & State Tournament Sunday. - ***Tournament On! RAIN OR SHINE!!!***

The season is winding down, just as the weather is at its best!  So let's make the most of it!!!  Saturday (12/7) is Game #5 at Summit, and we look forward to seeing you there.

All the kids who participated in the Desert Cup Regional Tournament in November did an amazing job.  We are so proud of all our teams!  Those players who played in the Fall Desert Cup qualifying teams, will be returning to the Scottsdale Sports Complex on Sunday to fight for the championships!  If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them at the game tomorrow.

Game #4 - Game on at Summit!

Hopefully, everyone enjoyed the weather this week!  It was almost as beautiful as tournament tournament last weekend.  It was a beautiful weekend at Scottsdale Sports Complex, and Cielo represented with pride. We are so proud of all of our teams.  They came played hard and with tons of heart!  To top it off, almost all of them qualified for State Tournament in December!  We will post official tournament results next week.

Again, we are playing at Summit tomorrow!  The weather is going to be clear, cool, and sunny.   GAME ON!

Fall Desert Cup Tournament 2019 - Nov. 16th and 17th

Tournament is finally here!!!  This weekend is our Desert Cup Regional Tournament at the Scottsdale Sports Complex.  It's going to be an action-packed and exciting weekend! 

REMINDERS FOR TOURNAMENT WEEKEND:

• If your child is not participating in tournament, there are no regularly schedule games this week. 
• Regular season games will resume December 7th, since we are off for Thanksgiving weekend.  
• The link to the tournament schedules, field locations, and directions are below and have also been emailed out. 
• Players 9 years and older MUST bring proof of age (follow link for details).  
• Each team will be scheduled for 3 games on either Saturday OR Sunday
• Arrive one hour prior to the first game to sign-in.

Game #3 and Tournament Info

Tomorrow, we are playing Game #3.  This will be our last chance to prepare for tournament as a team, so be ready to learn and play!  

Tournament is only a week away, on Nov. 16-17, so read the information below if your child is participating.  

DESERT CUP TOURNAMENT

The Desert Cup Regional Tourney will be at the Scottsdale Soccer Complex: (8081 E Princess Dr, Scottsdale, AZ 85255). I will email times as soon as I receive them (usually times are out by now but they may come mid-week). For now block out the entire day.  

The top 8 teams in each division advance to State which will be Sunday Dec. 8^th (block that date as well just in case).  But, as I stress to the kids, the tourney’s focus should not be winning and advancing to State, it’s all about reconnaissance for what we want to work on when practices resume in the spring. Advancing to State and winning trophies is just icing.

What to Bring – Part 1:

•             Ages 9+: Must be proof of age, including 8 yr olds playing in the 9-10 yr old division.

•             All players: Plenty of water.  Must wear jersey, black shorts, shin guards, and cleats

•             Shade structures if you have them.  Next weekend’s forecast: Morning games will be in the low 70’s with afternoon games mid 80’s. Partly cloudy. Perfect weather for soccer tourney! There is a 20% chance of precipitation Sunday. Regardless of weather, unless lightning, the tournament will be played. Show up regardless. 

When to Arrive: 30-45 minutes before 1st game.  

Keys to Success:

1.            Remember, even though this is a tournament, it is a recreational league.  It will be natural for everyone (players and parents) to be amped up a little. Do your best to keep things positive and the kids will have a great time regardless of wins and losses. 

Remember, Activstars coaches are not allowed to be on our team’s field during the tourney (instead we’re on other fields refereeing games as impartial refs) and us coaches while refereeing will occasionally miss calls. It happens in the World Cup Championship – we’re all human.  I promise the other referees do not hold any grudge against any teams when the games start. So be mindful how referees are treated because you don’t want a sub-conscious bias to develop. Hence…

Parents are strongly encouraged to find at the command tent Joe (ages 5-8), Jared (ages 9-10) or Jerzy (ages 11-15) if you have concerns or issues with how a game is called.  Go immediately. Do not wait until the game has ended.  There is no video replay regardless of what a cell phone records. Calls are not later overturned. Get a director to come observe the game immediately.

Refs have different styles of what they allow for physical play (soccer can be a physical sport).  You can lean into players with your body and arm, but you cannot shove or hit an opponent.   You can use your body to shield the ball but you cannot crash into another player.   On the larger fields, the linesmen with flags are NOT allowed to blow the whistle, as in professional soccer. The head ref on the field uses them as help when needed.  

2.            Avoid the 3rd game crash.  Sugary snacks during and between games and letting kids continue to play and practice between game can be a recipe for a lost last game.  Keep ironing kinks between games to 10 minutes. Keep the kids sitting in the shade cheering on our other teams.  Hour-by-hour schedule is below.

How the Tourney Works:

There are nine divisions at the tourney :

5-6 Silver and 5-6 Gold

7-8 Silver and 7-8 Gold

9-10 Silver and 9-10 Gold

11-12 Silver and 11-12 Gold

13-15

Each team will play 3 games against another team from its region (east or west region). A win is worth 6 pts, a tie worth 1 pt (it might be 3 pts – I forget) and 0 pts for a loss. Additional pts are earned for each goal up to a maximum of 3 extra pts.  The top four teams in each regional division advance to the Desert Cup State Tournament, which is Sunday, December 8^th at Scottsdale Soccer Complex. It is an additional $20 for the state tournament.

What to Bring – Part 2: Lawn chairs, blankets, canopy tents (it’s always enjoyable building a little city on fields in which our location has back-to-back games), plenty of water and snacks. Pack a cooler.  If you have tents, please share with families who don’t have one.  I’ve included everyone’s email in the class so you can coordinate food/beverages (all-age beverages only).

Generic Remind to All Parent Coaches: Keep the playing time equal for all players. The best way to develop players is at the tournament. When playing a doubleheader, sub fast and furious – every 3-5 minutes. Make bulk substitutions to keep the game flowing.  If low on subs, rotate forwards with defenders and midfielders with defenders instead of subbing them out.

Food: There will be a couple food trucks onsite with hotdogs, hamburgers, brats, etc. for sale.  

Lastly: If you need to reach me during the tournament, you can find me at the command tent on the 5-8 year old (north fields).

Game #2 - Dia del Futbol!

We kicked off the season right with some amazing games last week.  Everyone came to play, and we were impressed by the heart and effort out on the field.  We are rolling right into game #2, and it's going to be great!  Please view the game schedule below to find this week's opponent and field number.

Let the Games Begin & Desert Cup Tournament Registration

It's game time!  We have our first game on Saturday, and this is what we've been preparing for all season!  Come dressed and ready to play, and be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before game time.  That will give you time to sign-in, find your assigned field, and warm-up before the game.  It is such an exciting part of the season!

Participant Requirements:

For event consistency the ACTIVSTARS Team Soccer Jersey will be required for the Tournament.  No other team jerseys will be permitted; those in violation will be required to change or cannot participate. 

ALL participants are also required to wear shin guards and proper athletic footwear.  Cleats are not required but if worn must be soccer cleats specifically, no front stud-like football and baseball cleats.  Safety is always our #1 concern!

Soccer Clinic: Mni-Cone Challenge - TODAY, Oct. 20th

Come join us for the amazing Soccer Clinic: Mini-Cone Challenge! The event will consist of a short session of drills to refine ball handling and field awareness.  Following short drill session, players will be randomly divided into small sided teams and compete in a winner take all, small sided Mini Cone Tournament!

The Tournament will be knock-out style with each team receiving at least 2 games.

Winning teams will take home the MINI CONE!

Special Package Pricing for uniforms is ONLY available at this event; the package pricing will NOT be offered or given at regular practices.

During the camp, athletes will spend the day with a group of highly experienced camp counselors (coaches) from various soccer locations to provide the players with a variety of learning models.

Practice at Mirada - 9/28

The weather is wonderful, and the rain has been a nice reprieve from the heat!  As we head into fall, we have some upcoming info regarding practice so everyone stays in the loop.  We will be Mirada this Saturday (9/28), then practice will be held at Summit (Kyrene schools are closed over break).    We will have one Saturday off for fall break, and then we are back at Cielo!   In preparation for games, we are excited to have a few extra practices than normal.  What a great start to another fantastic season!

Back at Cielo!

As we roll into the season, we are excited to see all the new and returning families with our Cielo soccer family!  We are back at Cielo tomorrow (9/21), then at Mirada the following week (9/28).  We appreciate your flexibility, as we rotate fields for events and irrigation.  

The weather is finally cooling down, so there is hope that it'll be a little nicer tomorrow.  See you all soon!

Practice at Mirada - Sept. 14th

We had such a great time seeing everyone on Saturday at registration!  It's great to get back into the swing of things, though it was a scorcher!  Remember to bring plenty of water, shade, and loose, light clothing as the summer heat lingers a little longer.

Girls Soccer Summer Training Program

One of our former players, Avery Scher, is holding a summer soccer training program for girls ages 5-9.  She played for Coch Sean at Cielo for several years and has been playing for a club team this past year. She is a high school student who wants to share her wealth of knowledge and continue her training to be a soccer coach.  It starts on June 15th at 8am at Sunset Park in Chandler.  The program details are below. Big Weekend! Game #5 at Summit and State Tournament!!!

GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!  It's a BIG weekend with Game #5 and State Tournament, and Cielo is going to represent!!!  We will have regular season games on Saturday, May 4th at Summit at our normal game times.  Then, we head to State.

The teams below qualified for State Tournament and will be playing for the championships on Sunday, May 5th.  Many of these teams are combined or have players from other teams. Let the Games Begin!!!

Tomorrow is our first game for Spring 2019!!!  Below is the game schedule for the rest of the season and we will be at Summit.  When you sign in at the table, the field assignments will be there as well.

It is also Picture Day!!! The photographer will be there tomorrow, and you will be able to have your child's picture taken and purchase packages.  Come in your soccer best!


Games for ages 5-10 year old brackets are at Summit Academy (see flyer below).  Due to a lack of field space, players ages 11-15 will be at Palo Verde Park ( 3135 S Dobson Rd, Mesa, AZ 85202) .  If you want your child to get pictures, make sure to stop by Summit, before your game, to get pictures.  They may be closing down early due to the field change, so they may not be there for the last practice.  I don't schedule them or have direct contact with the photographers, I'm just sharing from previous experience.

The City of Mesa didn’t open our fields at Summit, so we are locked out.  We are going to grab a field down the street, and hold practice there. Trust us, we are just as frustrated as you, but we will make practice happen.

Please communicate this with everyone you have contact with on your team!!! Last minute changes are tough to get out to everyone, so we appreciate your help getting out the word.

Summit for the Season

WEEEEEE'RE BACK!!!! at MIRADA

Hey All!  We have missed you, but the weather was relentless.  It went from freezing cold, to what's shaping up to be a very warm Saturday.  Practice will be held at Mirada Elementary School tomorrow 3/2, so we can't wait to see you there.

Feb. 9th - Soccer Practice at Kyrene de las Brisas

Happy Fri-YAY!!!  Just a reminder, we are at Kyrene de las Brisas tomorrow for practice.  Practices will be held at the normal times, just a different location.  Can't wait to see you all tomorrow!

Week #2 - Off and Running!

We are off to a great start, as we embark on this beautiful Spring 2019 soccer season!  For those new and returning, the team information is posted below.  Be sure to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled practice time to sign-in and warm-up.  Be sure to bring plenty of water and come dressed for the weather, as it will dramatically change by the end of the season.

We will have shin guards and balls on sale at the registration desk for two more weeks.  If you need to order a uniform, it can be done online and there are flyers at the desk as well.

We hope you all enjoyed and fun and restful break!  Registration is open and our first practice Saturday, January 26th at Cielo Elementary!  Follow the link below to register for the Spring 2019 season.  It begins this Saturday and goes until May.  We look forward to seeing you all very soon!  Let me know if you have any questions.

The first site should be correct one you need for registration.  If all else fails, just call to register at 480.541.1500.  They will not register students after the deadline, which is quickly approaching, and we don't want anyone left out!  Thanks for your help!

Be sure to choose Cielo, since the there are three sites that register through Kyrene.  

5-6 year olds:

9:00-9:30 am - Registration & Warm-Up

9:30-10:20 am - First Practice and Team Assignments

7-8 year olds:

10:45-11:15 am - Registration & Warm-Up

11:15-12:05 pm - First Practice and Team Assignments

9-15 year olds:

12:30-1:00 pm - Registration & Warm-Up

1:00-1:50 pm - First Practice and Team Assignments
